New Albums & EPs — 19 April 2012

Having released their first underrated but overwhelming success, ‘The Blue Thread Saga’ back in 2008.  Indonesia’s Astrolab made a comeback with ’Poor Trendy Boys, a 4-track EP released under Dufflecoat Records last December. Poor Trendy Boys is a thoroughly satisfactory comeback EP, nonetheless, some pure ambient ethereal beauty of  Blue Thread Saga has partly obsoleted by the attempt to stimulate something new. The new EP has now been superseded by the light unrefined-felt indie rock with consistent not too upbeat but not too slow tones. The band guitarist, Ranggar told that Poor trendy boys was recorded in a week and has been influenced by the sounds of ‘Creation Records’ and the English alternative rock band ‘Spacemen 3′.

Out of four, ‘Gray and Fall’ and ‘I Wish The Sun Keep Me Warm’ are two of my most favorite songs from the EP. Both are alternative rock flavored tracks, Gray and Fall is an energetic drum driven track that has merged with yearning vocals and some sassy guitar noises. I do enjoy the flow of instruments throughout the song, very smooth but forceful-not catchy but addictive. While, I Wish The Sun Keep Me Warm- the song started out awesomely with impressive guitar driven rock and consistent unpolish-sounded guitar riffs before fadeing out soothingly with boy and girl chorus  (This song’s ending part is probably the only remaining sound reminiscent to The Blue Thread Saga).   Marching forward in different direction is a brave that worth a praise and again ‘Poor Trendy Boys’ is a satisfactory comeback EP that really worth having.
